Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer personalization?

Yes. Select STĀV pieces may be personalized with a Cooper's Mark — a workshop-applied marking inspired by traditional cooperage identification methods. Cooper's Marks are limited to initials and/or dates and are available on select editions and gift sets.

Why does every STĀV piece look different?

Because every stave begins as real barrel-grade Oregon oak with unique grain, rays, color variation, and seasoning character. No two pieces age, toast, or finish exactly alike.

What is Oregon oak?

Quercus garryana, commonly known as Oregon oak or Garry oak, is slow growing, difficult to mill, and uncommon within modern commercial forestry. In the Pacific Northwest, it competes with fast-growing and economically dominant softwoods like Douglas fir, making cooperage-quality Oregon oak increasingly limited.

Why quarter sawn oak?

Quarter sawn cooperage oak offers improved structural stability, tighter grain orientation, and visible medullary rays prized in traditional barrel making.

Will my STĀV vessel flavor my drink?

During the break-in period, the oak and proprietary char will naturally influence early pours with notes of smoke, spice, vanilla, roasted coffee, or soft tannin. Over time, the vessel seasons and the flavor influence becomes more subtle.

Why do some editions show more grain variation or surface character?

STĀV editions intentionally honor different expressions of the stave. Variations in grain, medullary rays, color, and surface texture reflect authentic cooperage material rather than cosmetic uniformity.

Where are STĀV products made?

Designed and crafted in Napa Valley using cooperage-grade Oregon oak and traditional barrel-making methods by a master cooper.

Are all editions always available?

No. Material variation and cooperage selection naturally limit production quantities across each STĀV edition.

Is every product identical?

No two STĀV pieces are exactly alike. Variations in grain, rays, color, seasoning, and cooperage character are intentionally preserved throughout the STĀV editions system.

How should I care for my STĀV vessel?

Rinse with warm water, dry immediately, and periodically condition the exterior using the included or purchased care kit. Avoid soaking, dishwashers, and prolonged moisture exposure.
